Major scavenging techniques employed in a two stroke marine diesel engine are as under-
- Loop scavenging – The inlet and exhaust ports are machined by engineers in the same side of the cylinder liner.
- Cross-flow scavenging – The inlet and exhaust scavenge ports are machined by engineers into opposite sides of the cylinder.
- Uniflow scavenging – Majority of experts are adopting this technique. In this technique, they machine the inlet ports around the liner about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom. Experts may use an axhaust valve instead of exhaust ports. Most manufacturers are accepting this technique for their two stroke marine diesel engine.
The properties of cylinder liners rely on the material quality used by manufacturers to craft them. During smelting process, they add some elements to the grey cast iron to produce an alloy with enhanced mechanical properties, including –
- Hardness
- Corrosion resistance
- Machineability
- Manganese – it is responsible for enhancing mechanical properties
- Chromium – It is responsible for adding hardness and corrosive resistance
- Silicon – It is responsible for reducing the formation of white cast iron and make grey graphite cast iron instead.
Machining includes internal machining of the bore that is different from other engines and should not have a perfect finish. Engineers carry out other machining on the landings, including the grooves cutting for rubber ring seals.
The inlet ports are machined into the liner, which helps in reducing the hindrance fresh air supply. The cylinder liner is fitted within the water jacket where water is distributed to cool the combustion section of the cylinder. Manufacturers use high temperature resistant rubber rings that are fitted to machined landings above the exhaust ports and scavenge to prevent ingress into the liner via the ports.
