As the name suggests, cylinder liner is a cylindrical-shaped, thick, metallic layer which circumvents the piston to protect it from damages and promote its functions. It is fitted in the engine block where it works under testing temperatures and high pressures, with the piston and its rings sliding at a fast pace.
Why are cylinder liners used in machines?
The primary aim of installing cylinder liners in machine engine is boosting the performance of latter by way of decreasing the damages incurred in the process of generation of power. So, they are used in engines to fulfill the following properties:
1. Create Low Friction Surface
Cylinder liners which form the inner lining of engine cylinders, also serve as an easy sliding surface for movements of piston rings. Since the presence of liners reduces friction between the engine system, it also reduces the amount of lubricant used in the block.
2. Act as Efficient Heat Transfer Units
Engine machinery is always operating under a lot of pressure, thereby producing a huge amount of heat in the process. Exposure to excessive heat for prolonged duration can result in the breakdown of the entire engine and its associated systems. However, cylinder liners act as efficient heat transfer units and prevent any such failures. They receive combustion heat from the piston and transmit it across to a coolant.
3. Checking Engine’s Gas Volume
Modern day engines are sophisticated parts, even more so when they power highly complex machines. For engines consuming compressed gas as an energy source, cylinder liners also serve another function. They prevent leakage of compressed energy source and combustion gas from escaping out of the engine. For standing up to this requirement, liners are specially made from an alloy of conducting metals like iron, steel, etc. which can transmit heat invariably and stay unaffected by rising temperatures.
Which are the different types of cylinder liners?
Since cylinder liners are required to work in association with a variety of engines, they are manufactured in different sizes and three structures that suit up to 1500 types of engine models. The three types of cylinder liners are as follows:
1. Dry Liners
They come in direct contact with the engine block. Its outer diameter is made to perfection with precise cuttings and without contours.
2. Wet Liners
Compared to dry liners, wet cylinder liners are heavier in weight and intentionally made of thick walls. Their peculiar structure has sealing grooves instead of circular rings. It is always in contact with coolant while placed in the engine block.
3. Finned Liners
They are exclusively used in engines where ventilation is solely conducted through air passages. They follow the functional methods of dry liners; however, they are designed with small-sized fins for facilitating air movement.
